VIRTUAL FISH AQUARIUM

I love the idea of a virtual interactive fish aquarium mainly because you do not have to have a real fish aquarium and because by adding it to your desktop, website and google you can look at it every time you go on your computer.
P.S ( It is really fun to feed them!)
You can change the fish colors, fish food color and background.  This is how my fish aquarium looks like:

The other day I was walking in Manhattan on the Lower East Side and discovered an amazing store full with all kinds of vintage, restored and designer objects.  One of my favorite is a crocheted lamp shade. The fabric is starched to maintain its form.

TRAVELING BOOK LIBRARY - BOOKMOBILE

design squish blog

design squish blog

Projekt Mobilivre - Bookmobile Project is primarily based in Montreal and Philadelphia. It is a trailer converted into a small mobile gallery and library that showcases handmade books and zines from all over the world.  Traveling through Canada and US, this bookmobile visits community centers, schools, colleges, libraries, festivals and artist-run centers.  I happened to run into Mobilivre-Bookmobile while I was studying at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art and was stunned by the idea of a traveling gallery/library.

I LOVE: SHITAKUSA & KUSAMONO

design squish blog

design squish blog

Kusamono and shitakusa are a potted collection of plants. Plants used are typically moss, grass, lichen, small mountain flowers and plants, bonsai trees, bamboo, or bulbs, that may be arranged to heighten the beauty or reflect a certain season.  Usually a collection is displayed separately in special pots, driftwood, or even stones. Photos from beautiful blogs: Shitakusamono and Happy Hearts at Home.

CROCHETED CLOCK BY STANLEY RUIZ

Siesta stiffened crocheted doily by Stanley Ruiz . This is really nice.  I even was thinking of making it myself - taking old lace, stiffening it with starch…  but it probably would not be as nice as the one above.

MOSS RUG

design squish blog

design squish blog

This moss rug is perfect! I found it on Environmental Graffitti Blog.  - “Created by Switzerland-based industrial designer La Chanh Nguyen, the small indoor greenspace features three types of live green mosses - ball moss, island moss and forest moss - that grow in individual “cells” of plastazote, a decay-free foam” The moss carpet absorbs bathroom moisture. Mosses flourish in damp, humid environments such as bathrooms.  You probably will need to have a window of some sort in the bathroom because i think moss also likes sunlight, but otherwise this is a great idea.
I always wanted to have a bed out of moss.  Moss is really soft and good to sleep on.  I know this from experience. Once I was in the forest and I was very tired. I found a large field of moss the size of a bed. I slept on it for three hours.  The idea of moss as a carpet or rug is only natural. In fact, I am seriously considering growing my own moss rug.

BAGS FROM RECYCLED LEATHER

design squish blog

Recently I started making my own bags from recycled leather and reused materials. Image above is the first bag I made out of small ripped leather purse and old leather skirt.  I added leather material from old skirt to the bottom of the purse.  The image below is a bag I made from ripped fake leather bag I actually found in the garbage. I fixed the bag I found in the garbage and sewed on white silk flowers that came from old jacket.

REDECORATING FURNITURE - SILKSCREEN, STENCILS

design squish blog

Marlies Spaan and Jolanda Muilenburg silkscreened patterns on beech wood cabinets and wardrobes.
I was also thinking, if you are tired of your old furniture and if your furniture is simply very boring and ugly, it is possible to achieve similar effect by adding some pattern to your furniture through using stencils or wallpaper. I do not know though if it is going to look as beautiful as the wardrobe on the picture above.

SALT AND PEPPER SHAKERS OUT OF SODA BOTTLES

design squish blog

Me and Paul did not want to buy a salt and pepper shaker and decided to do-it-yourself one.  We thought it would be an interesting idea to make salt and pepper shakers out of soda bottles.  We used a bottle from ALE 8 1 (pronouncedA LATE ONE) - authentic Kentucky soda available only in Kentucky and JARRITOS - mandarin flavored Mexican soda from the deli in Brooklyn.

REUSE WOOD SHIPPING PALLETS AS A BED FRAME

reused crates

I saw this photograph on Sandbox Studio website.  I really like the idea of using wooden shipping platforms and crates as a support for a mattress and as a bed frame.  I always see thrown out shipping pallets and crates in industrial neighborhoods and construction sites and have been wondering about ways of reusing them.

BANYA - RUSSIAN SAUNA

russian banya

russian sauna

The most important part of russian banya ( БАНЯ ) for me is jumping from hot banya heat into the snow or frozen river to cool yourself down. Another very important aspect of russian banya is beating yourself with hot white birch branches. I should not forget about drinking kvas ( russian root beer drink) in the banya entrance room, vodka and snacking on pickles, mushrooms, and etc after a good banya session .
It is a real authentic russian experience and I think everybody should try it. A friend of ours built russian banya in his backyard in upstate New York and apparently it is very easy and cheap to build.

YAHOO TOP TEN GREEN DO-IT-YOURSELF GIFTS

design squish blog, spicy dill pickle vodka

I wanted to check my yahoo e-mail and stumbled upon yahoo top ten green do-it-youself suggestions.  They are really fun. They include:  Gardening gift certificate, paper gifts made from junk mail, homemade infused vodka, homemade IPhone case, tickets to a local event and a subscription to Ready Made Magazine. My favorite is homemade infused vodka.  Here is a recipe from yahoo:  Find organic fruit, herbs, spices, or peppers at the farmers market (or your garden) and soak them a bottle of vodka (organic also, if possible). In two weeks or less, you’ll have a flavored treat for holiday cocktail parties. *
*(My own addition to the recipe:  You can also infuse vodka with pepper, horseradish and even pickle.  There are a lot of different ways to infuse vodka in Russian tradition. I am definitely drinking homemade spicy dill pickle infused vodka for the holiday!)
Recipe for Spicy Dill Pickle Vodka:
1 bottle of vodka
2 cucumbers
1 jalapeno pepper
6 cloves of garlic
sprigs of fresh dill
